Located at Rua Galvão Costa, 85, in downtown Santa Cruz do Sul, the romantic-style mansion, currently home to the Schütz & Kanomata Language Institute, was built around 1924 by architect Heinrich Schütz, brother of the owner Helmuth Schütz. With approximately 420 square meters distributed over two floors, the house has undergone several changes over the years.
In 1944, the ground floor was separated and transformed into a residence for the family of the heir Schütz. At the same time, an annex building of 165 square meters, distributed over two floors, was built on the northeast side to house a garage and service area. In 1957, this annex was expanded to include a second garage. In 1966, a major renovation modernized the infrastructure of the main building, transforming both floors into a single residence.
Starting in 1988, the mansion went through various stages of maintenance and restoration, preserving its original characteristics. In 1995, the space became home to the Schütz & Kanomata Language Institute, and at the end of 1997, a new renovation and expansion of the annex building began, with the aim of enriching its facade and style, bringing it closer to the architectural language of the main building. This work was completed at the end of 2001.
Inside the mansion, every effort was made to maintain the original characteristics. The rooms preserve the essence of the era, with furniture, tapestries, and decorative items that reflect the history and style of the construction. Every detail, from the antique furniture to the carefully chosen knick-knacks, was preserved to ensure that the charm and authenticity of the mansion are maintained, providing a journey back in time.
The area where the buildings are located is 7,460 square meters, including a parking lot for 18 vehicles, paved with sandstone and basalt cobblestones. The space is fully landscaped, illuminated, and carefully maintained, forming a set of architectural and landscape beauty.
The building is included in the Inventory of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Santa Cruz do Sul with partial preservation status.
