At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of the city, which was formed mainly of German immigrants, set about building what would be considered the largest neo-gothic catholic church in South America.
São João Batista Cathedral is located on Ramiro Barcelos Street, in downtown Santa Cruz do Sul, in front of Getúlio Vargas Square. Constructions began in 1928, coordinated by the German architect Simão Gramlich.
In 1936 the church was almost completed, but with the Second World War, work slowed down and the official end of the construction took place in 1977, with the construction of two larger towers, six smaller ones and the plastering of the east side. The cathedral has four bells that came from Germany.
