Located in downtown Santa Cruz do Sul, in the block delimited by Marechal Floriano Street, Ramiro Barcelos Street, Marechal Deodoro Street and Júlio de Castilhos Street, in front of São João Batista Cathedral, the Fountain Square is the oldest square in the city. It is a space that offers exuberant afforestation, benches, an ornate fountain and several monuments.
This Square, that dates back to around 1854, only five years after the arrival of the first German immigrants, played a fundamental role as the first delimited space in the city. It served as ground zero for the settlement process, and the first streets were laid out around it, as well as the first public buildings, such as the Catholic Church, which occupies the same spot where the São João Batista Cathedral now stands.
In an inclusive way, the Square is the home of various cultural programs, such as the book fair and craft fairs.
