Located in a green and privileged area, in the central block of Santa Cruz do Sul, formed by Marechal Floriano, 7 de Setembro, Tenente Coronel Brito and Borges de Medeiros streets, Bandeira Square preserves an important part of the city’s history, such as the Palacinho Building, Gruta da Coquinha and Independência Monument.
PALACINHO BUILDING
The building known as Palacinho was inaugurated in 1889 and was built in a neoclassical style, reminiscent of Greek temples. In 1893, during the Federalist Revolution, the building was taken over by revolutionary forces. Nowadays, it houses the Mayor’s Office and other departments of the city.
GRUTA DA COQUINHA
Inaugurated in 1915 in honor of the first lady Maria Cândida Menezes Costa, known affectionately as Coquinha, Gruta da Coquinha is built in precious stones. It is a combination of a cave with running water that flows continuously into a pool.
INDEPENDÊNCIA MONUMENT
This monument honors the centenary of Brazil’s independence. It is located right in front of the Palacinho and displays the busts of D. Pedro I (proclaimer of independence), Gonçalves Ledo (defender and fighter for the independence), José Bonifácio de Andrade da Silva (supporter of the independence), and Joaquim José da Silva Xavier (Tiradentes, martyr of the indepence). In the upper part of the monument there is a figure of a woman holding a flag and a torch. The work was created by the Italian artist Giuseppe Gaudenzi.
The Bandeira Square and the Palacinho Building are listed as the city’s cultural heritage.
